What Hiring Managers Actually Look for in a Resume (Survey Results)

The Survey

We surveyed 200+ hiring managers across technology, finance, healthcare, and marketing to understand what truly matters when they evaluate resumes. The results challenge many popular resume myths.

Top 5 Things Hiring Managers Look For

Top 5 Things Hiring Managers Look For

1. Relevant experience with measurable impact (89% rated "very important") β€” not just years of experience, but demonstrated results.

2. Skills match to the specific role (85%) β€” they want to see that you've read the job description and can deliver on its requirements.

3. Clear, concise writing (78%) β€” a resume that's easy to scan wins over one that's densely packed with information.

4. Career progression (72%) β€” evidence of growth, increasing responsibility, and upward trajectory.

5. Education and certifications (54%) β€” important but less so than experience for most roles outside entry-level.

Biggest Surprises

Resume design was rated "important" by only 23% of hiring managers. Clean and readable beats creative and flashy every time.

Cover letters are read "always" by just 26% of respondents, but 61% said a great cover letter can tip the scales for borderline candidates.

Employment gaps of less than 6 months were "not a concern" for 78% of managers. The stigma around gaps is fading fast.
